Help:Formatting Templates

From Dicepit
Jump to navigation Jump to search

A number of special formatting templates have been picked up from other Media Wiki installs, most notably from Wikipedia. Most have extensive documentation, although much of the documentation is about their intended use and functions on Wikipedia or their other original sources.

Please feel free to use any of these templates, even for uses beyond their original (documented) intentions.

Main

The Main template allows you to denote that a section of an article has it's own listing elsewhere. Generally it is used after a Heading or Sub Heading and is followed by a brief description of the page.

Example:

Short note about Shadowrun, but you can follow the Main Link above to learn more about it.

Infobox

The Infobox template allows for right side bar information, as common on many Wikipedia pages by topic. It can be configured in a number of ways.

Example:
Test Infobox
Example alt text
Caption for example.png
Header defined alone
Data defined alone
All three defined (header, label, data, all with same number)
Label and data defined (label) Label and data defined (data)
Below text
Test Infobox
Label 1 Data 1
Label 2 Data 2
Label 3 Data 3
Header 4
Label 5 Data 5: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

Sidebar

The Sidebar template makes a sidebar list with less structure than Infobox.

Example:

Hidden begin

These two templates: Template:Hidden begin and Template:Hidden end, allow you to make a section of the wiki hidden, but displayed with a click. It can be modified in a number of ways, as noted in the documentation.

Examples:

Message Boxes

There are a number of "box" templates taken from Wikipedia. Wikipedia actually uses slight variants of these boxes on pages depending on the type of page they are intended for use on, be it an article, talk page, help page, etc. They all look similar but not exactly alike, and some have special features like shrinking into a side box for use on the right or left edge of the page, etc. All can be configured to some amount, for example the image can be changed or turned off.

Ambox

Ambox is intended for uses on articles, and has a nifty color edged tab. It can be small and left aligning.

Examples:

Cmbox

Cmbox is intended for uses on Category pages, and has a background color.

Example:

Fmbox

Fmbox is intended for uses as a footer or header. It extends across the full 100% of available width.

Example:

Imbox

Imbox is the message box intended for use on Image pages. It has a thick colored border and can be placed inside itself.

Examples:

Ombox

Ombox is the message box intended for use on "other" pages of wikipedia. It has a thin border, and can align to the right of a page.

Examples:

Tmbox

Tmbox is the message box intended for use on Talk pages. It comes with a manila colored background and can be made to align to the right.

Examples:

Quotes

A few templates have been installed, from random sources, that allow for displaying quoted text in an often stylish fashion.

Cquote

Cquote centers the text and places graphical quotes around it.

Example:
You have the right to remain silent, and all that jazz.

Quote box

Quote box makes a right aligned quotation box with source.

Example:

You have the right to remain silent, and all that jazz.

Leon Dunlop, Episode 2: Ghost Juice

CallOut

CallOut makes a right aligned quotation box with source and graphical quotation marks.

Example:

Start quote rb.gif You have the right to remain silent, and all that jazz.  End quote rb.gif

-- Leon Dunlop, Episode 2: Ghost Juice'

Rquote

Rquote makes a chunk of quoted text that can be aligned left or right. It features graphical quotes, source, and citation.

Examples:
You have the right to remain silent, and all that jazz.

Leon Dunlop, Episode 2: Ghost Juice

You have the right to remain silent, and all that jazz.

Leon Dunlop, Episode 2: Ghost Juice

Cquotetxt

Cquotetxt makes a big centered chunk of quoted text with enlarged quotation marks, and sourcing.

Example:
You have the right to remain silent, and all that jazz.

Leon Dunlop, Episode 2: Ghost Juice

Custom Templates

The following templates are custom designed for one use or another.

Designer's note

Designer's note was an old template used for placing comments about a concept into a page. It has been updated to use a new message box format.

Example:

Spoilers

To note that a page has spoilers, and a spoiler sub-page, simply place the Spoilers template at the top of the page.

Example:

Stub

Stub marks a page as a placeholder page still in need of more information, and invites a user to add to it. It also places the page into the "stubs" category.

Example:

Complex Templates

Some content on the wiki requires a lot more formatting tricks.

Family Tree

Family tree is a complex template set for rendering collections of linked boxes with basic wiki markup content in each box. Intended for use on Family Trees, it could also be useful for doing branching skill trees.
